Kookaburra sits in an old gum tree...

I wouldn't say that I'm necessarily a bird watcher, but, I did notice the other day when a kookaburra perched on our back fence. I hadn't seen any wild ones since moving here, although we hear them all the time. Then, on Friday, I looked out the window and there was one on the fence. I took a few photos and before long, a friend joined him. I laughed, trying to get them to do the same, but they wouldn't make their distinctive call. A third kookaburra was flying around but never sat on the fence with his pals. I was able to get really close to these 2 and snap their picture.

Merry, merry king of the bush is he. Laugh kookaburra, laugh kookaburra, gay your life must be!

I love that song! I had an Aussie friend way back when I was a ski bum and she taught that song to the preschool class that we taught. I sing it to FFM all the time now, complete with kookaburra puppet!
